Una bella signora molto elegante esce dal portone di un antico palazzo di Vienna. È Irene Wagner, moglie del famoso avvocato Fritz. Mentre si immette nella strada, è aggredita verbalmente da una donna che le rivela di essere l’altra amante del giovane musicista dalla cui casa Irene stava uscendo e le chiede dei soldi per non rivelare la tresca. Irene è una giovane donna con una vita soddisfacente, denaro, ma ahimé si annoia! e si era scelta questo giovane amante per passare il tempo. La donna sa di lei e della sua vita e la minaccia continuando a chiedere denaro. All’improvviso Irene ha paura di perdere tutto quanto a sua disposizione è sconvolta e decide di pagare. Ma la paura ormai la possiede: rinuncia ad uscire, si comporta diversamente, mangia poco, si sente perseguitata. Il terrore la devasta il pomeriggio in cui la donna si presenta non più in strada, ma addirittura proprio a casa, entra di prepotenza e si siede in salotto! Ora vuole l’anello più prezioso che ha al dito ed Irene acconsente. Il marito nota la sparizione e chiede spiegazioni anche del suo strano comportamento. Distrutta decide di uccidersi e compra una fialetta di morfina ma proprio quando sta per ritirate il pacchetto col veleno, entra il marito che da bravo avvocato aveva già scoperto tutto. Si era servito di un’attrice principiante molto brava ed aveva così costretto la moglie a confessare concedendole poi il perdono. È un racconto lungo di Zweig e si legge tutto d’un fiato; si nota la capacità nella scrittura di un grande lavoro d’ introspezione ricordando che l’autore era amico di Freud. Ciò rende partecipe il lettore delle varie fasi dello stato d’animo nella donna: dalla sorpresa alla paura che diventa sgomento che alla fine è angoscia, il vero titolo in tedesco.

She goes to the pharmacy and buys a vial of morphine but just as she is about to collect the package with the poison, her husband enters and, as a good lawyer, had already discovered everything. He had used a novice actress who was very good in the part and thus forced his wife to confess and then granted her forgiveness. It is a long story by Zweig and you can read it in one breath; the ability to write a great work of introspection is noted, recalling that the author was a friend of Freud. This makes the reader participate in the various phases of the state of mind in women: from surprise to fear that becomes dismay which in the end is anguish, the real title in German.
