Dicembre: A Elise

io l’ho visto posarsi sui rigori dell’inverno

assai più dolce parve la primavera perché tardiva;

e l’intero mondo è buio, O bellissima.

December: To Elise

Where has flown the spring we knew together?
Barren are the boughs of yesteryear;
But I have seen your hands take wintry weather
And smoothe the rain from it, and leave it fair.

If from sleep’s tree these brown and sorry leaves,
If but regret could drown when springs depart,
No more would be each day that drips and grieves
A bare and bitter year within my heart.

In my heart’s winter you were budding tree,
And spring seemed all the sweeter, being late;
You the wind that brought the spring to be
Within a garden that was desolate.

You were all the spring, and May and June
Greened brighter in your flesh, but now is dull
The year with rain, and dead the sun and moon,
And all the world is dark, O beautiful.
